Modix introduced Generation 5 on 4 September 2026 as an infrastructure upgrade across its BIG printer range. The company says machines ordered through the summer are already shipping on the new platform.

The changes include Duet 3 controls, distributed print-head electronics using CAN bus, an integrated accelerometer for calibration and motion tuning, Ethernet connectivity and a revised touchscreen interface. The direction is expansion: adding capabilities to an existing machine rather than replacing the whole printer.

The roadmap needs a separate label. Modix plans to introduce Bondtech INDX tool changing, compact pellet extrusion and a 45-degree print-head system at Formnext 2026. These are upcoming features, not capabilities confirmed as delivered by this announcement.

PrintVeld’s take: this matters to South African workshops making large prototypes, fixtures or display pieces. Our interpretation is that modular upgrades could make machine planning more flexible; it is not a local performance test. Which upgrade would actually improve your work: more materials, higher throughput or less support waste?
